Summer Event
The day time activities will centre around Oakwell Hall, a splendid Elizabethan manor house and the Red House, the 17th century home of a prosperous cloth manufacturer and merchant. Both properties had connections to the Brontes in real life and also in fiction. The houses open at 12 noon - there is an admission charge of £2 to Oakwell Hall and free admission to the Red House.
Oakwell Hall is set in 100 acres of the original estate, now managed as a country park. The whole site includes a well stocked shop, a small cafe, toilet facilities, formal gardens, various nature trails and a separate countryside centre located at some distance from the Hall. The Red House site also includes a re-created 1830s garden and restored outbuildings housing two fascinating exhibitions.
We will meet at 11.30am at the Oakwell Hall car park (not the countryside centre), allowing time to use the visitor facilities before making a tour of the Hall. It is suggested that you bring a picnic lunch as the cafe has only a limited choice of hot and cold snacks. Depending on the weather you might also like to bring a change of footwear if we decide to explore parts of the nearby country park. Afterwards, we should have sufficient time to visit the Red House which is about a mile distant from Oakwell Hall. There is free parking at both sites
Directions (Oakwell Hall, WF17 9LG): Follow the A58 towards Leeds from Halifax (also M62, junction 26), then turn right onto A651. At the traffic lights turn left onto A652. Follow the tourist signs, turn left onto minor road to the car park at Oakwell Hall.
In the evening there is a meal at the Sands House Inn at Crosland Hill, at 7 for 7:30. This has been a popular venue with IVC members in the past, and there is an extensive menu. Please book your place for this as soon as possible so that we can get the required number of places.
Directions (the Sands House Inn, HD4 7AE): From Huddersfield Ring Road take A62 Manchester Road. After half a mile continue ahead through 2 sets of traffic lights. After quarter of a mile, at 3rd set of lights, turn left into Blackmoorfoot Road, Signed St Luke's Hospital. Continue ahead for approx. one and a half miles, past St Luke's Hospital on left, and up the hill. The Sands House Inn is on the left at the junction with Sands House Lane. It is the last building before you emerge into open countryside.
